WHEN DOMESTIC PRODUCTION MAKES SENSE

Although much of the United States’ manufacturing capacity has moved offshore, domestic production remains a valuable option for specialized soft goods.

For highly customized products or smaller specialty orders, manufacturing in the United States can provide closer communication, more responsive support, and greater visibility throughout production. These advantages are especially useful when a project requires unusual materials, specialized construction, ongoing refinement, or careful quality control.

THE VALUE OF CLOSE COLLABORATION

Producing domestically makes it easier for clients, designers, and production teams to communicate throughout a project.

Questions can be resolved more quickly, physical samples can be reviewed without lengthy international shipping times, and adjustments can be incorporated directly into the production process. This level of collaboration can be particularly valuable for complex products that do not fit neatly into a conventional manufacturing program.

SPECIALTY PRODUCTION AT UCS

Utah Contract Sewing has completed a wide range of customized, small-run production projects.

Our work has included a drone-capture deployment and sleeve system, specialized harnesses for Sarcos Robotics’ exoskeleton systems, and several products for Antarctic Logistics.

For Antarctic Logistics, UCS has designed, developed, and produced specialized soft goods used in support of its operations, including fitted covers for Therm-a-Rest NeoAir mattresses used at Antarctic base camps.

These projects required more than sewing alone. UCS provided design-development assistance, material sourcing, prototyping, production support, and direct communication throughout the process.

PRODUCTION DOCUMENTATION

When appropriate, UCS can also prepare technical documentation for specialty products.

Tech packs, bills of materials, construction specifications, and production notes help define the product and create a repeatable manufacturing process. This documentation can support domestic production and prepare a product for future manufacturing with another production partner.

DOMESTIC OR OVERSEAS?

The right manufacturing location depends on the product, quantity, budget, complexity, and required level of support.

Larger bag orders with established specifications may be better suited to manufacturing partners in countries such as Vietnam. Smaller or more specialized projects may benefit from remaining closer to the design and development team.

Domestic production is especially worth considering when a project requires:

  • Smaller production quantities

  • Specialized or unconventional construction

  • Frequent communication with the production team

  • Continued product refinement

  • Faster access to physical samples

  • Hands-on quality review

  • Customized materials or components
